Preventing Tailgating in Data Centers: A Security Must-Have and Growth Driver in the Southeast Asian Market

  • Release time: 2026-09-05

1. Why can't data centers do without anti-tailgating doors?

The security needs of data centers are completely different from ordinary commercial office buildings. While the core asset of a regular office is the physical space, data centers protect servers that hold personal information of millions of users, financial transactions, and critical infrastructure operation data. A single unauthorized physical intrusion could trigger massive data leaks, putting companies at risk of heavy regulatory fines or even criminal liability.

Anti-tailgating doors (usually referred to as Mantrap Portals, i.e., double-lock doors) were created for this purpose. They consist of a closed chamber with two interlocked doors, allowing only one person to pass at a time. The first door must close and complete identity verification before the second door opens, effectively preventing the loophole where "one person swipes in and multiple people tailgate." For data centers aiming for TIA-942 Rated-3 or higher, having anti-tailgating doors with dual authentication (access card + biometrics) has basically become an industry mandate.

2. Southeast Asia Market: Regional Trends and Key Players
Policy and Standards Driven

In Southeast Asia's largest economy, Indonesia, data center construction must comply with national standard SNI 8799:2023 (which references the TIA-942 standard) and PDP Law No. 27/2022. This means data centers have clear technical and seismic structural requirements, and their physical security systems (like anti-tailgating doors) are key investments to meet compliance and avoid administrative fines (up to 2% of annual revenue).

Market Response and Localized Supply

Southeast Asia's local market is quickly responding to this demand, creating a scenario where international brands and local integrators coexist:

International Giants Landing: The well-known Dutch brand Boon Edam, through its local partner PT. Axia Prima Sejahtera, has successfully delivered 5 sets of Circlelock Solo anti-tailgating doors to two data centers in Cikarang and Batam, Indonesia. At the same time, products like ASSA ABLOY's MP100 Security Portal are also available in the Singapore market, highlighting their 3D sensor and biometric integration capabilities.

Rise of Local Manufacturing: Indonesian local company PT. MSM Tiga Matra Satria launched the MSM GATE – Mantrap Ultra Guard series, offering full solutions from standard RFID to integrated facial recognition and cloud control, and emphasizing customized sizes and functions based on customer needs. This demonstrates the rapid maturity of the local supply chain in both technology and service.

Technology Upgrade Trends: The technology of anti-tailgating doors is also evolving, moving from traditional weight sensors and contact floor mats to 3D stereoscopic cameras or TOF (Time-of-Flight) 3D sensors. These can detect automatically and accurately whether multiple people are in the compartment without relying on staff cooperation, completely eliminating misjudgments and "person-to-person" tailgating.

Not Just "Doors": Logistics and Operation Challenges

In practice, anti-tailgating doors are just one part of data center physical security. A commonly overlooked vulnerability is the loading area and visitor management. Data centers almost daily receive spare parts, cooling equipment, or vendor devices. If only the main entrance is strictly guarded while the X-ray inspection and digital registration of packages and personnel at the loading area are relaxed, the entire security system can have gaps. Integrating digital processes with a visitor management system is a key measure to close this gap.

Conclusion

The anti-tailgating door market in Southeast Asia's data centers is currently in a phase of rapid growth driven by compliance, technology upgrades, and localized supply. For operators, this is not just a physical door; it’s the first strategic line of defense to meet strict regulations, protect data assets, and build customer trust. With the continued deepening of the digital economy in Southeast Asia, the market space for this "security gate" is expected to further expand.
