How Revolving Doors Work and How They Save Energy

  • Release time: 2026-09-28

1. Core Structure: More Than Just a Few Pieces of Glass

From the outside, a revolving door mainly consists of a fixed circular shell and an internal rotating cross-shaped wing door. But if you take it apart, it actually includes several key components:

Fixed Shell: Usually cylindrical or curved, with glass curtain walls on both sides, forming an enclosed passage. The shell will have an opening for people to enter and exit.

Rotating Wings: This is the core moving part, composed of a central shaft and 2 to 4 wings arranged radially (3 or 4 wings are the most common). The wings form separate "compartments" between them.

Central Shaft and Drive System: The central shaft connects the wings to the drive motor at the bottom. Modern revolving doors usually use variable frequency motors for smooth acceleration and deceleration.

Control System: This is the "brain" of the revolving door, including sensors (like infrared, radar, safety edges), PLC (programmable logic controller), and inverter. It handles detecting pedestrians, controlling speed, and executing safety logic.

Safety Devices: In addition to sensors, this includes emergency stop buttons, anti-pinch designs, and a clutch device that allows the wings to be pushed open during a power outage.

2. Working Principle: From "Airlock" to "Smart Door"

The working principle of a revolving door can be understood from both a physical and mechanical perspective.

1. Physical Principle: The Eternal Air Lock

This is the fundamental value of revolving doors. It cleverly utilizes the concept of an "air lock."

Imagine opening a regular door directly—the warm air inside and the cold air outside would immediately cause massive convection, causing huge energy loss. But revolving doors solve this problem with their unique structure:

Dynamic sealing: When the wing door rotates, it always maintains contact or minimal clearance with the inner wall of the fixed housing and the edge of the outer opening. This means that at any given moment, at least one wing door inside the revolving door is "sealing" the passage.

Isolation Zone: The "compartment" that pedestrians enter is a relatively enclosed space. When this compartment rotates from the outdoor side to the indoor side, it acts like a mobile "airlock," briefly separating outdoor and indoor air. After the person leaves, the compartment turns back to the outdoor side, ready to greet the next person.

Result: The revolving door allows people to pass through but almost completely blocks direct air convection. This can save up to 30% on air conditioning or heating energy consumption while effectively isolating noise, dust, and exhaust gases.

2. Mechanical Principles: From Manual to Intelligent Drive

Manual revolving door: The simplest form, relying entirely on pedestrian pushing and pulling. Its rotation speed and rhythm are controlled by pedestrians, but it lacks safety and convenience.

Automatic revolving doors: This is the modern mainstream. Their workflow is as follows:

Perception: When a pedestrian approaches, radar or infrared sensors outside the door detect the signal and send instructions to the control system.

Start: The control system starts the motor, driving the central shaft through the gearbox, causing the wing gate to rotate at a preset low speed (e.g., 2-4 revolutions per minute).

Speed regulation and safety: During rotation, if sensors detect someone inside the wing door compartment or someone attempting to enter in reverse, the system will immediately adjust speed or stop. Safety touches (a type of pressure-sensing rubber strip) can also trigger emergency stops if squeezed.

Stop: After a pedestrian leaves, the door continues to rotate for a while (to clear the compartment), then automatically stops waiting for the next pedestrian. During off-peak hours, it may remain stationary; During peak hours, it may rotate continuously.

3. Why a Revolving Door? — Advantages and Applications

The advantages of revolving doors are very obvious:

Energy-saving and eco-friendly: As mentioned before, it is a powerful tool for building energy efficiency.

Safe and orderly: Only one person can pass through at a time, naturally creating a queue and one-way flow, preventing crowding and collisions.

Enhancing image: Its elegant, modern appearance is often seen as a symbol of high-end venues.

Environmental isolation: Effectively blocks wind, dust, noise, and debris.

For these reasons, revolving doors are widely used in hotels, office buildings, shopping malls, airports, hospitals, and other places that need to maintain a stable indoor environment, have high foot traffic, and focus on appearance.

4. Challenges and the Future

Of course, revolving doors also face challenges. For example, they might not be very convenient for people with mobility issues or those pushing large luggage or carts. Therefore, modern buildings usually also provide a swing door next to the main entrance as an accessible passage.

In the future, revolving doors are becoming smarter. For instance, they can allow contactless entry with facial recognition or mobile NFC; use AI algorithms to predict foot traffic and automatically adjust speed and mode; and even integrate with building management systems to adjust operation based on indoor-outdoor temperature differences to maximize energy efficiency.

In short, a revolving door is far from just a simple rotating device. It's a precise 'airlock,' an intelligent 'traffic director,' and a perfect combination of building energy efficiency and human-centered design. Next time you walk through one, take a moment to appreciate the clever engineering behind it.
